Kate Winslet is back with two films – one directed by her husband, Sam Mendes – and she’s a hot prospect for the Oscars. Kira Cochrane meets an actor at the top of her game

There is a moment in Revolutionary Road that sums up why Kate Winslet is such a stranger to bad reviews. Her character, April Wheeler, is a former drama student and mother of two, who is living a cramped existence with her cramped husband, Frank, in a cramped house in Connecticut. It’s the kind of lonely, picturesque community where all that whispers down the sidewalks at night are the echoes of snippy, suburban arguments. This drudgery isn’t what April expected from life, and she has lately been funnelling all her energy into escaping with her family to Paris – a chance to start anew that seems at once both distant fantasy and entirely within reach.

Then she and her husband spend a day at the beach with their neighbours. As Frank starts talking about his improved prospects at work – and it becomes clear to April that the Paris dream might potentially fall away – the camera closes in on Winslet’s face, immobile and obscured by sunglasses, a shot that would make it hard for an average actor to convey anything much at all. In that moment though, poise meets devastation. April wordlessly, almost imperceptibly, implodes.

Loved Kate Winslet’s Academy Awards look? Want to imitate her impeccable style for a special evening out? Look no further! I’ve compiled details straight from Kate’s hairstylist and make-up artist so you can give it a go yourself.

Frederic Fekkai’s Renato Campora styled Kate Winslet for Oscars 2010. The hairstyle and inspiration: A modern day Veronica Lake, classic Hollywood glamour. Here’s how to get Kate’s gorgeous Oscars 2010 hairdo:

Start by applying FEKKAI COIFF STRONG HOLD VOLUME MOUSSE mixed with the FEKKAI COIFF PERFECTOR ANTI-FRIZZ SILKENING CRÈME from roots to ends. He made a side part before he dried the hair. He dried the hair with FEKKAI LARGE ROUND BRUSH and pined it in place as it cooled down. Next, he used a one inch curling iron to create soft loose waves. He finished with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY.

THE PRODUCTS ALL BY FEKKAI: Fekkai Coiff Strong hold Volume Mousse ($23), Fekkai Coiff Perfector Anti-Frizz Silkening Crème ($25), Fekkai Large Round Brush ($65) Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray ($23)

Kate’s long-time makeup artist, Jillian Dempsey, is responsible for her soft, ethereal make-up. Both the eyes and the lips got equal attention on this Oscar winner. Shimmering, champagne-pewter shades highlighted the eyes, while very saturated mascara delivered that extra definition. A pop of pink blush on her cheeks gave Kate just a hint of a natural flush. Jillian topped off the look with nude-pink lips.

Academy-award winner Kate Winslet wore a spectacular $2.5 million yellow diamond necklace, along with 10-carat fancy intense yellow diamond drop earrings and yellow diamond bracelets, designed exclusively for her appearance at the 82nd Academy Awards, on March 7, 2010, in Los Angeles.

A masterpiece of craftsmanship and a dazzling statement of glamour, the Art Deco-inspired necklace in platinum is based on jewels in the Tiffany & Co. Archives and features a triple-drop pendant with three extraordinarily rare fancy vivid Tiffany yellow diamonds, which surpass the quality of any other jeweler’s yellow diamonds.

The rectangular-shaped 13.09-carat yellow diamond and two approximately 6-carat yellow diamonds are among the most sought-after stones in the world. Tiffany jewelers surround these captivating diamonds with a total of 642 round brilliant white diamonds, each exquisitely cut and hand set.

Kate Winslet was first spotted on the E! News red carpet, looking the epitome of Hollywood elegance. Her hair was perfectly shaped into a classic do, almost Veronica Lake esque.

Kate is wearing a stunning Atelier Yves Saint Laurent by Stefano Pilati bustier gown with a 2.5 million yellow diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co. She carried a YSL satin clutch and wore silver YSL sandals. As you might recall, Kate won wearing an Yves Saint Laurent creation last year.

Ms. Winslet was interviewed on the official Academy Awards red carpet pre-show, and said that the pressure was off and that she was relieved to watch everyone else panic. She was asked about her children and if they might take up acting, to which Kate said that they are both very eccentric characters and interested in the craft itself. She finally was cut off by the extreme cheers of someone walking the red carpet behind her, to which she jokingly replied: “Must be George Clooney.”

Gorgeous Kate just presented the award for Actor in a Leading Role to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart.

To wrap up the updates, Kate did not seem to attend any after parties that evening.

Yesterday Ms. Winslet was on stage at the Kodak Theater to walk through her announcement speech for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, which will be held tonight. Kate looked casually gorgeous in a leather jacked whilst going through her part for the Oscars. She will present the award for Actor in a Leading Role.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will air internationally tonight. Please check out your local listings for further details. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to stay up and wait for the results this year myself but my good friend Mycah has promised to keep the site updated on everything Kate.

Stay tuned at Kate Winslet Forever for the first photos, details on what Kate’s wearing, red carpet interview scoop, and more!

Baz Bamigboye has some new scoop regarding Kate Winslet’s preparations for the role of Mildred Pierce. Check it out!

Kate Winslet told me she has been getting her hands dirty as she prepares to play Mildred Pierce, based strictly on the James M. Cain novel rather than the Joan Crawford movie version.

‘When you first see Mildred, she’s working in a restaurant kitchen, baking chicken pies. Then she does this for herself and runs her own business. I’ve been plucking chickens and preparing them for the pies,’ the Oscar-winning actress told me at an Orange Bafta party hosted by Lancome and Harper’s Bazaar at the St Martins Lane Hotel.

‘I love doing it!’ Kate told me as she demonstrated with her hands exactly what she did to those poor old chickens.

‘It was the Depression,’ Kate explained. ‘People had to live – and eat.’

Check out this amazing photograph of two incredible actresses, Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster, that is featured in the March 2010 issue of InStyle (US edition). Although short, the accompanying interview is very interesting. I personally love to hear Kate discuss her work and acting process and it is especially interesting when she discusses it with someone like Ms. Foster.

Jodie: It’s amazing for me to watch a great actor and feel the same things they feel. It doesn’t always happen, but it does with you.

Kate: I remember watching The Accused and thinking, now I understand what acting really is, it doesn’t exist in fact. What you do is you just be. You don’t act, you be. I genuinely carry that in my work. I feel like I took that from you.

Jodie: Aw, thank you!

Kate: From the very beginning you were somebody I could latch on to. You made this crazy dream I had of becoming an actress completely possible.
