The December 1997 issue of Australian Vogue printed excerpts of Kate Winslet’s diary from the filming of Titanic. In her diary Kate candidly documenting the process of filming Titanic from her personal perspective, from her first meeting with James Cameron in 1995 to the final takes of the film in 1997. Needless to say, Kate’s diary is a must read for both Kate Winslet and Titanic enthusiasts alike! Unfortunately, the issue of Australian Vogue is very hard to come by but you can read on for Kate’s diary here at Kate Winslet Forever. Enjoy the rare treat!
December 7, 1995, Los Angeles.
Today I met [director] James Cameron. Even though I haven’t read for him yet, he showed me a model of the Titanic and how they were going to do the special effects shots by using a pen which is actually a tiny camera.. The story is incredible, horrible. One lifeboat only just missed landing on top of another. Some were sent out with 11 people on them and yet so many people drowned. The character he’s considering me for is called Rose DeWitt Bukater, a 17-year-old from Philadelphia who is about to marry a man she can’t love. She’s on this ship, feeling as if she is about to be condemned for life, only to find true love on board the Titanic…
Kate Winslet is back with two films – one directed by her husband, Sam Mendes – and she’s a hot prospect for the Oscars. Kira Cochrane meets an actor at the top of her game
There is a moment in Revolutionary Road that sums up why Kate Winslet is such a stranger to bad reviews. Her character, April Wheeler, is a former drama student and mother of two, who is living a cramped existence with her cramped husband, Frank, in a cramped house in Connecticut. It’s the kind of lonely, picturesque community where all that whispers down the sidewalks at night are the echoes of snippy, suburban arguments. This drudgery isn’t what April expected from life, and she has lately been funnelling all her energy into escaping with her family to Paris – a chance to start anew that seems at once both distant fantasy and entirely within reach.
Then she and her husband spend a day at the beach with their neighbours. As Frank starts talking about his improved prospects at work – and it becomes clear to April that the Paris dream might potentially fall away – the camera closes in on Winslet’s face, immobile and obscured by sunglasses, a shot that would make it hard for an average actor to convey anything much at all. In that moment though, poise meets devastation. April wordlessly, almost imperceptibly, implodes.
Check out this amazing photograph of two incredible actresses, Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster, that is featured in the March 2010 issue of InStyle (US edition). Although short, the accompanying interview is very interesting. I personally love to hear Kate discuss her work and acting process and it is especially interesting when she discusses it with someone like Ms. Foster.
Jodie: It’s amazing for me to watch a great actor and feel the same things they feel. It doesn’t always happen, but it does with you.
Kate: I remember watching The Accused and thinking, now I understand what acting really is, it doesn’t exist in fact. What you do is you just be. You don’t act, you be. I genuinely carry that in my work. I feel like I took that from you.
Jodie: Aw, thank you!
Kate: From the very beginning you were somebody I could latch on to. You made this crazy dream I had of becoming an actress completely possible.

Do not forget that Kate Winslet will present the award for Leading Actor at tonight’s British Academy Awards ceremony. Watch the red carpet arrivals on BBC Three from 7.30pm and the ceremony from 9pm on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the evening will be aired on BBC America at 8pm ET and 7.30pm PT.
Kate attended the Lancôme and Harper’s Bazaar BAFTA Party in London on Friday. Photos from the event will be added later tonight. Meanwhile, check out this little article from Telegraph.
“There will be no tears,” she told me at the Lancôme pre-Bafta party in association with Harper’s Bazaar at the St Martin’s Lane Hotel. “This year I can just relax and enjoy watching everyone else get nervous and appreciate their delight when they collect their awards.” After I disclosed in January that her husband Sam Mendes will direct the next James Bond film, I asked her if she would prefer to play the heroine or the villain. “That is a very clever question,” she laughed. “But I am not going to answer it.”
The new issue of Esquire features an interview with Leonardo DiCaprio and he discusses the sex scene between him and Kate in Revolutionary Road. Check out this fun story!
Kate Winslet is one of my dearest friends. We have the ultimate trust in each other and the best of intentions for what we want to do. I knew Kate before Sam [Mendes, her husband] even met her. So on the outside, it may seem strange to do a sex scene with a woman while her husband is directing. But it didn’t feel that way to me.
When the scene was about to start, Kate said, in front of the crew, “Wait, wait, this is totally weird.” She turned to both Sam and I and said, “Are you guys okay?”
We both looked at each other and said, Yeah, we’re totally fine.
She said, “It’s even weirder that you’re both totally fine.”
